Membership
We are a First Responder Organization delivering our emergency medical services and communications utilizing the unique mobility and flexibility of motorcycles when applicable. We service both mobile and fixed base or standby events. But you don't need to ride a motorcycle or have a ham license to help out.
We provide education and Emergency Medical Services using state certified medics and communications services via FCC licensed Amateur Radio Operators, for community events sponsored by both non-profit and for-profit organizations.
It helps (but is not required) if you:
- own, ride, or have a motorcycle license. However, MMRT's mission focuses on supporting our community with our services using motorcycles when appropriate. MMRT does not judge the worthiness of its member by whether they do or do not ride and or own a motorcycle.
- are a Texas State Certified Pre-hospital Personnel (ECA, EMT, AEMT, and EMTP/LP). All members must successfully complete proficiency or maintain currency in a provider type CPR with AED Basic Life Support (BLS) approved program.
- are a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Licensed Amateur Radio Operator (HAM), or own ham equipment. The majority of our communications is conducted using amateur radio which is regulated by the FCC. We encourage members to acquire a minimum level amateur radio operator license so they may effectively communicate with other members during our events.
MMRT is a Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) registered First Responder Organization (FRO). Our medical members are state certified and have Medical Direction under Dr. Mark Ackrell. Dr. Ackrell is also an associate director with the Austin/Travis County EMS system's Office of the Chief Medical Officer.
MMRT communications members are FCC licensed Amateur Radio Operators and have two primary roles. One is to provide net control or dispatch services for our medical operations and event partners. The other is to provide communications support to our partners that are not authorized to operate amateur radio equipment and member who have not yet obtained their FCC amateur radio operator license.
MMRT members are expected to be available and actively volunteer their time at MMRT-supported events and meetings (general and training). If you have a genuine desire to be part of an organization to volunteer your time and talents in supporting your community with our type of services, then MMRT may be for you.

Do I need to ride a motorcycle to volunteer with MMRT?
No. MMRT is a registered volunteer First Responder Organization who provides EMS support and Emergency Communications support to both mobile and fixed based events.
Our mission is to primarily provide EMS support to mobile events using our motorcycles. However, there are still opportunities for medics and HAM radio operators who do not ride a motorcycle to provide support.
Many of the events that we support require medics at a first aid tent located at the finish line and/ or roaming medic teams patrolling the event on foot.
Do I need to be a medic to volunteer?
No you do not have to be a medic to participate. MMRT also provides emergency communications at each event and relies on FCC registered HAM radio operators to provide this service.
If you are not a medic or a HAM Radio operator and still would like to participate, we encourage you to contact us so that we explore ways in which you can volunteer with us. Many of our valued members volunteered with us as support personnel and over time have become medics and HAM radio operators.
Non medic motorcycle riders will be teamed up with a motorcyle medic and can provide valued support such as traffic control, communications and assisting with medical equipment.
Do I need to be a FCC licensed HAM radio operator to volunteer?
No. You do not have to be a FCC licensed operator to volunteer with MMRT, but it sure does help! MMRT relies heavily on the use of HAM radio for emergency communications at each event. Our medics are dispatched to patients and communicate event issues and details via HAM radio.
MMRT sets up a net control at most events and establishes a command post to bridge the communications between MMRT and event organizers, police departments, sherrifs departments, EMS and other HAM radio organizations.
MMRT will be glad to help you obtain you FCC amateur radio operator license if you wish to obtain one.
Are there benefits to become an MMRT member?
Membership does have its privileges!
Not only will you be a member of a well respected and professional FRO, you will be part of an organization that values its members, provides a valuable service to our community, provides on going training, enjoys what they do and have fun doing it. Where else can you ride the Texas hill country while providing such a valuable service to the community?
MMRT members are reimbursed for gas expense for mobile events (As documented in the MMRT reimbursement policy), provided ongoing continued education, provided medical trauma kits and oxygen tanks (Registered medics only), assisted in obtaining FCC Amateur Radio license (if needed), and much more.
